PRIMARY PURPOSE

Reduce preventable death and disease in Durham's African-American population comparing 2000 with the Year 2010 and eliminate the health status disparity between African-Americans and the general population by Year 2010.

HISTORY

"The Community Health Coalition is a 501-C 3 non-profit organization founded in 1989, by Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH an Internist and Mr. John Mickle, an Certified Public Accountant. The community-based Health Coalition is fortified by its linkage with the Durham Academy of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy (an association for African-American medical professionals) to provide both volunteer leadership and medical grounding. The Health Coalition brings together and focuses existing community resources to provide culturally sensitive and specific health education, promotion and disease prevention activities to and in Durham's African-American community."

The Community Health Coalition Team is lead by the Durham Academy of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy (DAMDP). Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH is the Chair. CHC consist of professionals with a variety of expertise and knowledge. Members range from community volunteers, students (graduates & undergraduates), nurses, nutritionist, internist, pharmacist, dentist, and family and specialty practice physicians.

The CHC Board has 14 members and 4 positions. The current officers are:

Desiree Palmer, DMD - Secretary
Nathan T. Garrett, Jr. CPA - Treasurer


There is a major involvement from other community resources including: The Old North State Medical Society, Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black people (Health Committee), Duke/UNC Student NMA, Auxiliary of Durham Academy of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy, North Carolina Central University Health Education, Durham County Health Department, Durham Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Durham and vicinity, Teen Link, Cancer Information Service and its national Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer (NBLIC), Chi Eta Phi Nurses' Sorority, Central Carolina Black Nurses' Council, Inc., Cultural Diversity Task Force, Partnership for a Healthy Durham (formerly Healthy Carolinians), Lincoln Community Health Center, UNC School of Public Health, American Cancer Society, Campbell University, North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, Durham Regional Hospital, Duke University Health Systems, Duke Community Medicine, American Diabetes Association, Durham Chapter of LINKs, Inc., CAARE, Inc., American Red cross, Coalition Action Against AIDS in the Black Community, Eagle Village, and the American Heart Association.
